In 2013 Emmy Award winning artist Susi Sie approached John Black of Cypher to create sound design for a film called Cymatics which went on to win a Vimeo staff pick and garner several editorial features.
All scenes were filmed by using lycopodium powder, 50 Hz, a Canon 5D and a 100mm macro lens.
The finished edit was turned over to Cypher to reinterpret the movement sonically.
In October 2024 we launched a series of 9 short films based on unused scenes from the original shoot, that illustrate the beauty of analogue chaos and organized sound.

Our first Forever Reel, showcasing the combined work of FutureDeluxe and Tendril ♾️
This reel celebrates the journey and the ‘work behind the work’ —the multitude of explorations, interactions and thousands of daily design decisions that give depth, richness and intention to the work we love.
We first screened this reel on the incredible AV system at OFFF last month. It was extra special to share this moment with so many of our colleagues, friends, and freelance collaborators, all of whom have been part of the journey so far and whose fingerprints are in this beautiful montage. A great reminder to us that the people we get to work with, our collective culture and diverse community is what makes the work worthwhile.

Tendril partnered with Hublot for the launch of the Arsham Droplet, a visionary creation born from the collaboration between Hublot and acclaimed contemporary artist Daniel Arsham.
This groundbreaking timepiece redefines versatility — wear it as a pocket watch, pendant, or showcase it as a table clock. Crafted from titanium, rubber, and sapphire crystal, it embodies the perfect fusion of antique elegance and futuristic innovation.

The story of Racer 37 - Zach Hughes, and the fall of the Death Circus is one told with a level of abstraction and artistry that I've always connected with. Like every great story, the viewer is given a certain amount of freedom to inject their own interpretation of what transpires. Zach's power is never fully understood, his demise never explained.
It was here that I wanted to start my own continuation of this story. The psychic force that allows Zach to destroy his opponents ultimately destroys himself, as he races against his own past and future. As he is torn apart, an echo of his soul remains, forever trapped between the final rest of death's slumber and the never-ending desire to win, to keep running.
GHOSTS is a collection of visions, memories and fragments of what remains of the spectre of Zach Hughes. A psychic echo flickering through time, forever haunting the long-abandoned track.
GHOSTS is a tribute to the original animated short "Hashiru Otoko" created by Yoshiaki Kawajiri. This anime had a tremendous impact on me early in life, and was my gateway into other classics such as Vampire Hunter D, Wicked City, and Ninja Scroll. It's with the utmost respect and admiration for Kawajiri-san's inspiring work that I chose to make this film.

Tendril collaborated with AOI and CYPHER to create a high-fidelity immersive gallery experience for digital art collectors. Built in Unreal Engine, rendered in real-time on the cloud, and streamed via browser on any device, the gallery offers collectors, the public, and artists the ability to experience and showcase digital art, in a natively digital way.
There is an abundance of exceptionally crafted NFT/digital artwork out there and practically no fitting way to experience it. We took on the creative challenge to design and build something for the art and artists that we love. Our mandate was to explore how far we could push the quality of a real-time 3D online museum for digital art — a love-letter to the likes of Naoshima Island or Storm King.
On launch, the immersive theatre of the gallery included a large scale collaborative artwork created by Tendril, titled Life#1. With sound design by CYPHER, this artwork is the first part of an ongoing exploration of the algorithms and processes that guide how living things grow and the forms they will take.
Conceptually, the gallery was designed to be as serene and immersive as possible: blending past and future, nature and architecture, interior and exterior. It’s a space that you can and want to spend time in, exploring and discovering little surprises around each corner (there are easter eggs to be discovered). As digital artists and creators, we are so excited to be able to provide a space for people to enjoy some of the most amazing digital art out there in a setting worthy of its craft and significance.
The generative, ambient music system was designed to produce ever evolving sonic experience within the hub and gallery spaces. Layers of ‘loops’ play in a random order based on sets of defined rules, generating a unique composition on each visit to the gallery. The daytime experience is in a major key, while the night mode is minor, shifting the mood slightly.
A note about the Ambient System
John Black, Cypher
When the opportunity came up to collaborate with Tendril and create the auditory experience for the Shōyu AOI Gallery, I couldn’t have been more inspired by the concept for this immersive space. I immediately decided that it should be something that utilizes procedural music and sound to create a unique, evolving soundscape.
I have been interested in generative music for some time, being familiar with Brian Eno’s Music For Airports and subsequent installation work, I thought it would be fitting to design a procedural system, with additional inspiration coming from the Japanese Kankyō Ongaku ambient music movement of the early 1980s. Kankyō Ongaku literally means ‘environmental music’ and I wanted to bring some of the textures and moods from this genre into the gallery, and contribute to the overall sense of meditative space that we were after.
I decided to use a Pentatonic scale at 88.88 BPM, so that any combination of sound elements, or loops, would sound harmonious, and avoid any dissonance when layered. At night, the soundscape changes to the relative minor for a slightly different feel. Over several sessions, using both hardware and software techniques, sounds were designed that had different properties, divided by texture, melody/sequence and percussive qualities. Each sound was composed to decay ‘naturally’ and were varied in length, so that when looped they would overlap in unpredictable ways, creating chords, new melodies etc. This is one layer of the system.
A randomized player was developed ( with Baud ) in Unreal Engine that utilizes several logics to keep the generative system changing. We have 4 groups of ‘tuned’ loops for both the gallery and main Hub of Shōyu, day and night versions. At any one time, four layers of loops are playing simultaneously, the number of repeats of each sound is randomized (1-3) , as is the order in which they are played, as well as pause time before play. There are around 145 loops in total, providing an incredible amount of variation, while still leaving space for quiet moments to occur. In addition to the tuned loops we placed environmental sounds through the spaces, like wind, crickets and water drops, that are also a part of the sound world.

Tendril & Cypher joined forces with the Hublot team and brand ambassador Samuel Ross in a fashion-forward collaboration to craft a launch film for the release of the new limited-edition Big Bang Tourbillon Samuel Ross.
Ross’s signature use of colour and love of stark geometry and urban design come together in his first wristwatch collaboration. The timepiece’s stylized hexagonal shape, titanium honeycomb mesh, and vibrant orange hue make for a sportier direction to Hublot’s flagship model.
We wanted to strike the perfect balance between the new watch’s minimalist design and precise intensity — marrying Hublot’s classic look with the sensibilities of Ross’s unique graphic language. Modern, friendly, and minimalist tones were brought together to create a fresh aesthetic in this design-driven film and ode to industrial elegance.

An empty, immaculate high-end residence. Every design object and piece of furniture occupies a specific, calculated space. The utility doesn't seem to matter or take place, the form's smoothness and perfection is everything. Everything is calm, perfect, the light embraces the space and its beautiful design. But there are other objects that escape that standard, that are of a different kind. Objects that inhabit every house, purely functional or that simply clash with the aesthetic pretension of the environment. Used and left aside, hidden, concealed, disguised, made invisible, as if they were shameful. These are the ones who break into the aseptic landscape and take it by storm. A blow worthy of a class struggle, where a useful minority rebels against pretension and sets out to tear down its symbols.

CHAOS THEORY
Chaos theory is the study of the unpredictable: nearly identical events that exist in the present and can have drastically different outcomes in the future. While science and math are the structured systems of knowledge, predictability, rationale, and logic, the chaos theory teaches us that the only law is that there is no law and the only thing that we really know is that we don’t know. No matter how much man seeks knowledge and attempts to gain control, the unpredictability of nature will always sit beyond our grasp.

Tendril collaborated closely with Cypher and the team at Hublot to craft and create a launch film and visual asset library for their Square Bang Unico Collection – premiering at Watches and Wonders Geneva 2022.
The Square Bang is a fresh, iconoclastic tribute to Hublot’s flagship timepiece — The Big Bang. This bold statement required a bold film; marrying classic design with the fierce spirit of the brand. We wanted to inject some extra energy and a hint of playfulness while maintaining the brand’s clean, sharp aesthetic.
Placing the SQUARE as our hero and visual anchor, we sought out fresh perspectives and compositions pointing to the watch’s iconic appearance. Underscoring the bold visuals, the film is tied together by a powerful, energetic soundtrack and equally bold edit. Dim the lights and crank up the volume to get the full BANG!

Collaborating closely with the team at Hublot, Tendril & Cypher crafted a launch film and visual asset library for the Big Bang Integral Time Only collection.
Artisans at heart – the team at Hublot wanted to celebrate the naturalistic aspects of the Integral Time Only collection. Focusing on the raw materials themselves – Titanium, Ceramic and Gold – our goal was to capture Hublot’s approach to material innovation and the experimental paths that go into fusing each material into these wearable works of art.
The balance of material physicality and the mechanics of individual watch elements was visually paired with abstract moments of raw material fusion through their changes of state. Using patterns, symmetry, and minimal design elements, we were able to mimic the mechanical precision and structured aesthetic of the Hublot identity.

"Hugo in the Garden" is a multi-collaborative project. Here we explore how artificial common materials work into an organic atmosphere. Some polyurethane foam creating a kind of creeper or some machine knitted wool growing around a plastic bonsai. All of them grow, like the plants we all know. But particularly these ones, in a different way.
We Started from the sketches of Eze Matteo. Six N. Five took all of them and made the 3d art direction and sculpture design. Twistedpoly was in charge of the beautiful animations. The final touch was from Cypher, who made the lovely music and the sound design. Enjoy the results!

We were approached by Verizon’s 140 Team to develop the sound for their 5G launch in partnership with Apple, The NFL, The New York Times & Riot Games.
In the first three films of six total, we were tasked to deliver a contemporary score with the energy and excitement needed for such a momentous launch.
In addition to the separate films, we also composed the music and sound for the keynote launch, featuring Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell; President and CEO of The New York Times Company, Meredith Kopit Levien; and CEO of Riot Games, Nicolo Laurent.

Introducing the 2021 VALORANT Champions Tour, the official global circuit for VALORANT professional competitive play.
The VCT comprises three levels of competitive play, Challengers, Masters, and Champions. Challengers begins at the end of January 2021,
(Barcelona) Trizz studio directed “Rethink”, in a series of fully animated films for high end mattress maker Harmony Lux’s latest US BeautyRest tv and digital campaigns by New York agency Badger and Winters.
The master film is set under the sea, where a sweetly hopeful turtle is making her way through tons of junk plastic bottles which get transformed into pure, soft threading and the hero mattress.
“This conscientious product proves that BeautyRest is an industry game changer doing their part to save nature”, explains Trizz director Oriol Puig, “I really appreciate their ecological process using recycled sea plastics from SEAQUAL - which uses about 50 bottles per mattress. Coincidentally I knew about SEAQUAL, a catalonian company that supplies the threads. I had visited them and seeing they were authentic, bestowed a dutiful basis as we designed the CG vignettes, art directed by Fabio Medrano”.
The campaign which covered deliverables for all media channels utilises Trizz’s full range of capabilities in character animation, fluids, particles, cloth and architectural CG rendering.
“This US project marks our first award with new representation by Hustle”, explains Trizz EP Christopher Vulpi. “This was a great team effort, made during the COVID lockdown. Prior to award, Trizz had just completed setting up our remote systems - so we really hit the ground running and with Senior producer Simon Bath, managed a crew of 15 to get everything out on time, including Oriol’s director's cut”.
We hope you enjoy quality sleep and a cleaner sea!

Oddly Satisfying is a series of different short loops created by the artist Andreas Wannerstedt, each one based upon the idea to trigger some kind of odd satisfaction and that inexplicable feeling we all know. We were asked to create the sound design for several of these experiments.
Battle Force is a celebration of sport and culture - a global event where hoops, art, music and dance all come together.
Nike approached oddfellows to develop an animation language that could be easily adapted from web film to environmental animation to social content.
This years theme was “process.” So we went back to the fundamentals of creativity focusing our energy on “the act of making.” We wanted to expose both the process of work and the tools used for making and building.
So we got to work and took a step out side of computer-comforts and spent the summer in scanner beds with spray paint and xacto blades.

Beneath each sport vignette lies a metaphorical story of navigating chaos through a vast and volatile digital space. Unrivaled content delivery, performance, and security are portrayed by three elite athletes who shift and adapt to any obstacle thrown their way.

Mongrel Media is one of Canada’s leading film distribution companies specializing in art house, foreign and independent feature films and documentaries.
Helios created a new title intro to be debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival. Slow motion footage of a running dog was stabilized, tracked and rotoscoped. The resulting footage was layered into a dynamic composition and treated to resemble the look of an animated oil painting.
In this second phase of Nike's LunarEpic launch campaign, the shoe has arrived on Earth bringing with it otherworldly powers. Roads curve and stretch seemingly into infinity. Impossible runs suddenly feel effortless. Gravity is nonexistent.
This was our sixth project with the amazing team at Nike. Working with them and Blacklist, it was our task to take Nike's creative strategy, and then conceive and develop a narrative and visual structure for the brand film around the tagline 'run forever'. The manifestation was a 45s film and sound design (created by CypherAudio), key print and digital 'hero' visuals, social media clips and a large-scale track and field dome installation. The process with Nike is always incredibly collaborative and exciting.

AutoStore is a Norwegian tech company, leading innovation in the field of robotic warehouse automation. Simply put: it is a warehouse sized vending machine. An OCD dream come true!
On one hand, it is a highly sophisticated and complex system, driven by deep product engineering and code. On the other hand, it is delightfully simple, elegant, and adaptive. The voice we imagined for AutoStore brought together the best of these qualities: the sophistication and minimalism of Apple, combined with the visionary futurism of brands like SpaceX, Tesla, or GE.
Tendril Studio teamed up with friends Worship and CypherAudio to produce this elegant, sci-fi inspired brand film.

Rising from the surreal landscape of an incredible alien world, Nike's reinvented running shoe, the Lunar Epic Flyknit, was aproduct launch of galactic proportions. The visuals for the launch were meant to further elevate the innovative, weightless, futuristic technology of the revolutionary running shoe.
Blacklist and Nike have taken their relationship to the next level with their latest collaboration: the Nike LunarEpic athletic shoe campaign. The campaign’s launch is anchored by a gorgeously rendered film, co-directed by creative studios Tendril and Frame with the backing of an international team of talented artists. This hero spot sees the shoe’s organic shapes and structure materialize across space and time, setting down and leaving its signature print in the dust of a far off planet. The campaign then extends into our humble Earth world, playing on giant screens in NikeTown stores around the globe, as well as heavy rotation on Nike’s social channels, where the shoe was teased in mysterious short clips before its final epic reveal at Nike’s flagship NYC store.
To achieve the distinctly otherworldly look of the film, Tendril imagined the spot itself as a transmission received from deep space, a rare chance to look on as something truly new materializes from the elements before our eyes. Set in an alien landscape inspired in part by the visually stunning Pariah canyon, Blacklist and Tendril together assembled a global network of design and animation specialists to focus on each aspect of the film, which in turn were each focused on a different feature of the LunarEpic’s unique design. In the end, viewers are not only mesmerized by the journey and the transformation that takes place, but are compelled to recognize the distinct features that make the LunarEpic so remarkable. The final film was featured in New York, Berlin, London, Portland, and Tokyo.

We had the chance to collaborate with the one and only GMUNK on this film for the Infiniti QX50.
From GMUNK :
The fine folks at 72andSunny came to Munkowitz late in 2017 with a bold idea – they wanted to explore the relationship between Humans and technology and explore the notion that together, this union is more powerful than ever. They wanted Munko to create a series of films that spotlight the all-new INFINITI QX50 through the relentless cycle of man pushing machine—and machine pushing man.
You see, the drive to innovate is innately human – and it has been since the dawn of man. We were always inventors, building newer and better tools to fuel our societies. The technologies we create have always been an extension of the people we are. In other words... machines reflect the humans who dream them up. They are our extra limbs. Our superpower. Our evolutionary legacy. No machine represents that more elegantly or self-awarely than the new Infiniti QX50.

Big data. Small data. Cyberthreats and Cybersecurity. Giant themes that are far reaching into everyones lives.
Meet Oylo. The protector and defender software company that is providing cutting edge technology to assure data will not fail us.
Barcelona Brand Agency, Mucho briefed Trizz co-founder and director Oriol Puig to visually describe the technological nuances that their client Oylo provides.
Their story premise: Keep out the bad. Protect essential infrastructures crucial to maintaining a functioning society.
Trizz studio’s Story Driven Branding methodology:
Presented with a powerpoint technical document that also served as a design kick-starter, Trizz co-founder Oriol Puig and CG art director Alex Martin translated the agency concept into one of the most nefarious, metaphoric and explicative films to date - in order to describe cyberattacks and how Oylo keeps us all safer. Fully in line with the release of Oylo’s new interactive website, the film follows the principles of good and bad, but takes the visuals into a realm on par with feature film level direction with pure cgi effects.
The brand story, relevance and 3d design converge with fascination; portraying nightmarish particle animation and soothing female voiceover narrating just how effective the product is. The film is a one of a kind, feeding from the daring new corporate design, as well as visually explaining exactly how the product consistently wins over cyberattackers.
At Trizz studio we work hard to make stories that matter, developing and providing results that consumers can relate to beyond the 30 second flash messages regularly seen on tv. Rather, we craft stories that are memorable, fascinating, beautiful (and sometimes crucial) to watch again and again, whilst providing content opportunities that can be shared with intriguing and informing details about quality products and brands which make a real difference.

Few things are as inspiring as nature and the human form. In this experimental film, director Eddie Alcazar imagines a world that blurs the line between fantasy and reality to celebrate sensuality inspired by Versace's Bright Crystal fragrance. The project gave Alcazar the opportunity to explore using the highest end film cameras, namely the Panavision 65mm Panaflex camera, together with a combination of stunning practical and visual effects.
The allure of a high-end fashion brand drew Alcazar in, allowing the creative freedom to make beautiful and emotional imagery, something soft and feminine.
"Bright Crystal" additionally required three main VFX teams to complete the complex elements of the film, all with the challenge of ensuring the end result still felt delicate, natural and real.

I had the honour of speaking at Blend in May of 2017 in Vancouver. Blend is a unique event in the design world, with no sponsors and a positive community atmosphere, it really is all about design, motion and sound.
As the first sound designer to present at Blend, I had an especially fortunate opportunity to speak about my background and career designing audio for motion and other mediums. The visuals for the talk were created by Worship, and really helped set the tone for my segment 'Constructing Imaginary Worlds'.
In addition to presenting, CypherAudio also created the sound for the opening title sequence The Blend Is Near.

About
Tendril's longtime friend and collaborator John Black (of CypherAudio) was approached by Stash Magazine editor and STYLE FRAMES executive producer Stephen Price to create a musical framework for the show's opening titles. John recommended Tendril as a great partner to create to create a visual, and soon after we were meeting with Stephen to discuss.
After some initial brainstorming at the studio, our Creative Director Chris Bahry reached out to the ultra talented filmmaker, designer and musician Anthony Scott Burns. Anthony had left commercial work to pursue feature film, and to us this project and client seemed like the perfect chance for an overdue collaboration. Together we came up with the self-referential story of a person creating a pitch, and the nightmarish encounters he has with himself and five ‘Gods’ that represent aspects of his creative psyche - the 'Gods' represent flesh/blood; technology/power; rest/play; form/function; love/passion.
We figured that anyone who has engaged in a pitch or any kind of creative process under pressure will identify with aspects of the ‘Ritual’ that plays out over the course of the sequence. With pitches, we put the best of ourselves out there to be the ones selected for a project and it's a painful and exhilarating experience. It's the nerd/artist's equivalent of extreme sports. It’s not meant to be a message that pitching is bad at all; but when we really got into it, things quickly became visceral and dark. We wanted to be true to the subject and this is what came out.
It was ambitious and there was certainly interplay between life and art during the piece’s inception. We wanted it to be an epic live-action and CG combo; plus the timeline was incredibly tight with just over a month for a 3-minute short with over 95 shots and no money. To that end, we drew on every resource at our disposal, including our partners for make-up and costumes, friends and family as actors, running around town with our own kit and gear, and the amazing team of designers and artists at the studio for execution. We came up with a lot of smart and cheap solutions for getting all the shots we wanted and are excited to share it all soon in some behind the scenes materials.
After we had our footage, we enlisted Chris Murphy of Relish for editing and John got to work giving the score a deep, cinematic feel, building up slowly to the reveal of the Gods. The sound design opens with more traditional musical elements for the first two movements and then introduces a more contemporary feel in the middle that continues into the finale.
All in all, it was a dream team collaboration that resulted in a work that we we hope depicts the essence of the pitch process in 3 minutes.
We were incredibly stoked to work on these three mini films with Alex Grigg, created for the cool people at Super Deluxe. It is part of a series of fragments designed to be seen on Instagram.
